Welcome to Week 5!
Sharyn Quirk
Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe we are already halfway through the term. Reaching this point is a good reminder to pause and appreciate all that has been achieved so far, while also looking forward to what lies ahead. Our community is at its best when we come together—whether at events, celebrations, or simply in the everyday moments of school life. These occasions do more than connect us; they show our girls what it means to belong to a community that is caring, committed, and supportive. When they see their parents and families engaging so wholeheartedly, they in turn are inspired to embrace their own learning with greater enthusiasm, to take up opportunities with confidence, and to recognise that they are part of something bigger than themselves. I warmly encourage you to continue to be present in these moments, as together we create the culture that allows every girl to flourish.
With this in mind, the coming weeks provide a number of opportunities for us to gather, celebrate, and support one another. I hope you can join us at these events and share in the experiences that make our community so special.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 12 students, who have approached their Trial Examinations with focus, resilience, and determination (even if accompanied by a little nervousness!). These exams marked their first experience with extended, three-hour assessments—a true milestone in their HSC journey.
To our Year 12 families and teachers—thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement during this important time. We wish our students well as they now move into the extensive feedback phase of their assessments, working to apply what they have learned and refine their skills in preparation for their HSC exams in Term 4.
On Tuesday evening, our school was transformed into a gallery of imagination and innovation as the remarkable talents of our Years 10, 11 and 12 students were showcased at the annual Bodies of Work Evening. From Textiles to Visual Arts and Design and Technology, the depth of creativity and skill on display was nothing short of inspiring. For our Year 12 students in particular, this was a milestone moment—the culmination of many months of dedication, from the earliest ideas through to the final execution of their HSC major works. Each piece reflected not only technical ability but also the passion, persistence, and originality of its creator.
This wonderful evening was held in our new Polding Centre, a true celebration of the multi-dimensional purpose of this space—not only as a hub for learning, but as a venue where creativity, community and culture come together. The atmosphere on the night was filled with pride and admiration, as parents, staff and students shared in the joy of seeing such extraordinary work brought to life. We are deeply grateful to the parents and carers who have supported and encouraged their daughters throughout this journey, nurturing the confidence to pursue and showcase their creative talents.
We are excited to invite you to our Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 5 September, beginning at 7:30am. This much-loved tradition is a wonderful way to start the day, bringing together fathers, grandfathers and father-figures with their daughters for a morning of good food, laughter and community spirit. It’s a chance to celebrate the special role these men play in our lives and to share in the joy of connection before the busy day begins. We look forward to seeing many of you there to make this a truly memorable occasion.
If you have not yet RSVP'd, please take the time to do so by Friday 29 August via the link below to assist us with catering.
Get ready for a spectacular celebration of music and talent as our College comes alive with Broadway hits at this year’s Cabaret Evening! On Thursday 4 and Friday 5 September, our amazing Performing Arts Department, alongside our talented students and staff, will take the stage to showcase the creativity, skill and passion that make our school community so vibrant.
This is more than a performance—it’s an opportunity for us to come together, celebrate the dedication of our students, and enjoy the joy of shared creativity. The Cabaret Evening promises to be a highlight of the term, full of energy, entertainment and inspiration.
Tickets are on sale now via the link below or through the App—don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable celebration of talent and community!
Embrace every opportunity, support one another, and make this Term 3 a time of growth and achievement. As we look ahead, may the weeks to come be filled with these same values—curiosity, courage, and connection. Let us continue to encourage one another, strive for excellence, and make the most of the rich opportunities within our vibrant College community. Together, we create an environment where every student can flourish. Wishing you all a purposeful and fulfilling Term 3.
Warm regards,

NAPLAN Review and Library News
by Kim Naylor, Director of Studies
In March, students in Years 7 and 9 took part in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). These assessments give teachers and parents/carers valuable insights into each student’s skills in literacy and numeracy.
The NAPLAN results are reported against Proficiency Standards with four levels of achievement, as well as against other students in Australia, to provide a clear picture on how students are performing. Areas of strength can be easily identified, as well as any areas where students may need support.
The proficiency levels are:
Each year, teaching staff analyse the NAPLAN data in collaborative teams, alongside other summative and formative assessments. By triangulating NAPLAN results with classroom-based assessments, teachers can identify trends, address specific skill gaps, and differentiate learning.
We encourage you to discuss your daughter’s results in Reading, Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and Numeracy with her.

Stella Maris College is committed to ensuring that every student can flourish, both academically and personally.
Our comprehensive support network includes access to Inclusive Learning sessions before school, during lunchtime, and after school. We also offer vibrant lunchtime clubs such as Stellamatics, Homework Club and Anything English, where teachers and/or student leaders provide individual or small-group help tailored to specific needs within their expertise. Students also benefit from our Stella Tutors Program, which offers tutoring from Stella Maris graduates and a supervising teacher after school until 5:30 pm, Monday to Thursday. Library staff are available to assist students with booking in a tutorial session.
For students requiring targeted assistance, we provide specialised intervention programs such as MacqLit and QuickSmart, designed to address specific learning needs and build confidence in students. Targeted classroom intervention is also a priority, with teachers implementing Departmental Goals, guided by whole-school improvement priorities. This operates alongside Student Support Plans and in close collaboration with Learning Support Officers. This ensures that support is both personalised and aligned with broader teaching and learning objectives.
The College also offers a wealth of enrichment opportunities for high-potential learners, including the da Vinci Decathlon, Future Problem Solving Program and the Maths Olympiad. Participation in these programs enhances critical and creative thinking by challenging students across multiple disciplines. Students address complex real-world issues, foster teamwork, and develop their analytical skills, ethical reasoning, and innovative thinking.
These programs, alongside our strong culture of academic care, ensure that every student is both supported and challenged to achieve their personal best.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your daughter’s learning journey. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like further information.
Awarded to our stellar recyclers who are helping reduce our school’s environmental impact by making the most of the Mini-Recycling Station in the Library! Thank you for making a big difference in small, meaningful ways!
Why is recycling mobile phones important?
Mobile phones contain minerals such as gold, cobalt, tungsten, tin, and coltan. Mining for these minerals in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo drives illegal bushmeat hunting, destroys crucial chimpanzee and gorilla habitat, and has been the cause of human conflict.
However, 99% of materials can be recovered when mobile devices are recycled.

Term 2 = Blue Reading Challenge
Term 3 = Pink Reading Challenge
Students track their reading progress on a special bookmark throughout the term. Once completed, the bookmark is signed by both their English teacher and a member of the Library Staff. Every student who completes the challenge earns a colourful Knud sticker as a reward!

A most enjoyable and very successful athletics season is nearing the end. The Stella athletics squad has been training hard since Term 2, and competing at weekly twilight carnivals at Sydney Olympic Park.
The first of our major championship events was held on Friday 15 August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre at the CGSSSA Athletics Championships. The Stella team was sensational – dominating in both track and field events all day. There was a great team spirit, lots of medals won and a very happy squad of Stella athletes!
Some of the highlights of the day included:
The season will end this Friday with the IGSA athletics Championships. This is a highlight on the Stella sporting calendar and we look forward to seeing our athletes compete again. Good luck to all members of the team!
The wet weather has caused some challenges for sport throughout Term 3! We are aware that many games and trainings have been cancelled due to the wet weather. The Sport Department will do everything possible to ensure that cancelled fixtures are played at a later date.
The rain this week caused the NSW Touch Regionals and the NSWCCC Netball Championships to be postponed. The new touch football date is yet to be confirmed, while the NSWCCC netball will now be played on Friday 29 August.
Best of luck to the Stella teams who will be playing at the State Final of the NSW Schools Futsal Championship in Windsor next week. Our U16 team will play on Tuesday 26 August and the U14 team will play on Wednesday 27 August. Congratulations to both teams on qualifying for the state final. Good luck!
