Stella Maris College offers many enrichment opportunities in all from Years 7 to 10. The program includes both extension classes and smaller group experiences to further develop the skills and abilities of these students by challenging them alongside peers who share similar interests, abilities and aspirations.
Selection for enrichment opportunities is based on a variety of academic and curriculum-based assessments. A student’s evidence of commitment to learning and teacher feedback is also used to inform placement.
Our timetable includes a variety of electives and levels within mandated subjects to suit students of all abilities and interests. For example, there are five levels of senior English. Enrichment also includes in-class differentiation across non-streamed classes. This means that, wherever possible, teaching and learning is varied in order to engage each student in ways that are best suited to her particular learning needs. Our students also undertake a study skills program and other curriculum-related programs from Years 7 to 12 that support academic and personal achievement.
Our Inclusive Learning team provides opportunities for students to extend themselves and to be challenged in their areas of personal strength and emerging interests. In addition to a tailored curriculum in the classroom, our students can participate in a range of competitions and workshops that involves individual focus or collaboration with their peers to solve and interpret problems and challenges.
In recent years, Stella students have recorded exceptional results in the FPS competition with teams reaching the National final. The FPS is a research-based academic program that teaches problem solving strategies, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, and effective communication. The interdisciplinary approach helps develop ethical leadership skills, prepares students for future challenges, and equips them with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
