Welcome to final week of Term 2!
Sharyn Quirk
Principal
Dear Stella Maris Community,
And just like that, we arrive at the final week of Term 2.
The pace of school life often means we move quickly from one event, assessment, rehearsal, competition, excursion or celebration to the next. Yet Week 10 offers us a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect on all that has been accomplished, experienced and celebrated across the first half of the year.
Over the past semester, our students have embraced opportunities with enthusiasm, courage and determination. We have witnessed remarkable achievements in the classroom, through creative and performing arts, in sporting pursuits, through service initiatives and in academic competitions. Each success tells a story of commitment, perseverance and growth, but perhaps even more importantly, it reflects the character of the young women who make Stella Maris such a special community.
Recently, we were treated to two extraordinary evenings through our Music and Dance Showcase performances. The talent displayed by our students was exceptional, but what was equally evident was the countless hours of dedication, practice and collaboration that made these performances possible. To stand before an audience and perform with such confidence and artistry requires courage, discipline and passion. Our students should be immensely proud of what they achieved.
I also extend my sincere gratitude to our Music and Dance staff whose expertise, encouragement and unwavering commitment continue to nurture and develop the gifts of our young people. Behind every performance lies an enormous investment of time, energy and care, and we are fortunate to have educators who inspire students to pursue excellence while fostering a genuine love of the performing arts.
This semester has also seen wonderful success across our sporting programs. Whether representing Stella Maris at local, state or national levels, our students have demonstrated not only skill and determination but also outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit. Success in sport is rarely achieved by talent alone; it is built through persistence, resilience, early mornings, extra training sessions and a willingness to support one another. We celebrate all those students who have worn the Stella Maris colours with pride and represented our College so admirably.
We have also celebrated students achieving success well beyond our College gates. Among the many highlights this semester was the opportunity for four of our Year 9 students to represent both Stella Maris and Australia at the Future Problem Solving International Conference in Indiana following their outstanding performance at the National Finals. While competition results are certainly important, it is the learning, collaboration, cultural exchange and personal growth that make experiences such as these truly transformative. The girls returned with new perspectives, lasting memories and a deeper understanding of what can be achieved when young people are encouraged to think creatively, work collaboratively and tackle complex challenges with confidence.
As I have walked around the College this term, I have been continually inspired by the energy, enthusiasm and spirit of our students. Whether in classrooms, on sporting fields, in creative spaces, through service initiatives or simply in the way they care for one another, our young women continue to demonstrate what it means to be people of Strong Minds and Open Hearts.
I hope the holiday break provides every student with an opportunity to rest, reconnect with family and friends, pursue interests they enjoy and return refreshed for the exciting term ahead.
This year marks a remarkable milestone in the life of our College as we celebrate 95 years of Stella Maris.
For almost a century, generations of students, staff and families have contributed to the story of this extraordinary community. Each generation has left its mark, helping to shape the vibrant and values-rich College we know today.
As part of these celebrations, I warmly invite all members of the Stella Maris family — parents, carers, alumni, past and present staff, and friends of the College — to join us for our 95th Anniversary Gala Ball, Legacy of Lights, on Saturday 12 September at the Manly Pacific Hotel.
This special evening will honour our past, celebrate our present and look confidently towards our future. It will be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, share stories and celebrate the enduring spirit of Stella Maris.
For our alumni, this may also be the perfect opportunity to gather a group of classmates and organise a table together. We look forward to welcoming members of the Stella community from across the decades as we celebrate our shared legacy and look towards the future with confidence and hope.
Tickets are now on sale. I encourage you to organise your table of 10 and secure tickets quickly.

As our community enters the holiday period, we will also celebrate an important occasion in the life of our College. On 11 July, the Church marks the Feast of St Benedict, whose vision and values continue to shape the heart of Stella Maris College.
Living in sixth-century Italy during a time of great uncertainty and social upheaval, Benedict sought a different path — one grounded in faith, wisdom, balance and community. What began as a personal search for God ultimately transformed Western civilisation. Through the monasteries he founded and the Rule he wrote, Benedict established communities centred on prayer, learning, hospitality and service.
The Benedictine tradition became a powerful force for preserving knowledge and culture. Benedictine monks carefully copied and protected ancient texts, advanced learning and scholarship, developed agricultural practices and established centres of education that would eventually influence the development of universities across Europe. In many ways, the stability and wisdom of Benedictine communities helped lay the foundations for the world we know today.
Yet perhaps St Benedict's greatest gift was not what he built, but how he taught people to live. His Rule encourages us to seek balance, to listen deeply, to treat others with dignity, to welcome the stranger with hospitality, and to recognise that God can be found in the ordinary moments of daily life.
These values remain at the heart of Stella Maris. They are reflected in our commitment to Community, Hospitality, Stewardship, Peace and Justice, and in our desire to create a learning environment where every young woman can flourish.
As we pause during the holidays, perhaps there is an invitation in St Benedict's wisdom for each of us. In a world that often feels busy and distracted, his call to be attentive — to God, to one another and to the present moment — is as relevant today as it was 1,500 years ago.
May the Feast of St Benedict be an opportunity to give thanks for the rich tradition that guides our College and inspires us to build lives of purpose, compassion and hope.
As the holidays approach, I encourage our students to embrace something wonderfully simple: a good book.
In a world that constantly competes for our attention, reading offers something increasingly precious — the opportunity to slow down.
Reading allows us to travel without leaving our chair, to encounter new ideas, explore different perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. It strengthens vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking, but perhaps more importantly, it nurtures curiosity, empathy and imagination.
The holidays provide the perfect opportunity to read purely for enjoyment. Visit a local library, browse a bookshop, swap recommendations with friends or revisit a much-loved favourite.
Research consistently demonstrates that reading supports academic achievement across all learning areas. Yet some of its greatest benefits extend beyond the classroom. Reading encourages us to think deeply, understand different perspectives and imagine possibilities beyond our own experiences.
Just 20 minutes of reading each day can have a powerful impact. More importantly, it can remind us that learning does not only happen at school. It happens whenever we remain curious enough to turn the next page.
If your family is looking for something a little different during the break, why not introduce your children to a classic film from your own teenage years?
Recently, I came across an article highlighting iconic films from the 1980s and found myself smiling at the memories they evoked. Films such as E.T., Back to the Future, The Karate Kid, The Princess Bride, Dead Poets Society and The Breakfast Club have entertained generations and continue to resonate today.
Beyond the nostalgia, these films provide wonderful opportunities for conversation. How have friendships changed? What values remain timeless? What would life have been like without mobile phones, social media or streaming services?
You may find that sharing a favourite movie becomes less about the film itself and more about sharing stories and creating new family memories together.
Parent tip: Some of these films reflect the attitudes, language and humour of their era, so a quick content check before viewing is always worthwhile. You can read the full article here: https://raisingteenstoday.com/best-iconic-80s-movies-to-watch-with-your-teen/
While the holidays are an important time for rest and renewal, they also mark the beginning of an important period for many of our senior students.
For our Year 11 students, Term 3 represents the final chapter of their Preliminary studies before they commence their HSC courses. The months ahead will provide valuable opportunities to consolidate learning, refine study habits and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
For our Year 12 students, the Trial HSC Examinations begin in Week 3 of next term. These holidays offer an important opportunity to revise, organise notes, complete practice questions and establish routines that will support success during the examination period.
Families may also wish to explore a range of external holiday study opportunities available across Sydney.
The College is sharing the following opportunities for information only and does not specifically endorse any external provider.

Balance remains key. Time for study should sit alongside time for rest, exercise, family and wellbeing. Students who return refreshed and prepared are often best positioned to perform at their highest level.
As we return for Term 3 on Tuesday 21 July, we also recommit ourselves to one of the simplest but most powerful contributors to success: showing up every day.
Regular attendance matters. Every lesson, every conversation, every opportunity to collaborate, participate and learn contributes to a student's growth, confidence and sense of belonging. Learning is cumulative, and each day provides experiences that cannot always be replicated through catch-up work.
Thank you to our families for the partnership you provide in supporting your daughters to be present, engaged and ready to learn. Your support makes a profound difference.
As we conclude Semester 1, I would like to thank our staff, students and families for the contribution each of you make to our College community. Stella Maris is a special place because of the people within it — people who continue to support, encourage and inspire one another each day.
Together, we continue to nurture young women of confidence, compassion and courage; young women who are equipped not only to succeed, but to make a meaningful difference in the world.
I wish all members of our community a safe, restful and joyful holiday break and look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 21 July for the commencement of Term 3.
Warm regards,

Celebrating 15 years, Good Samaritan Education (GSE) continues the educational ministry of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, serving ten incorporated schools across Australia. Our schools work together to ensure an educational culture where all are safe, valued and welcomed, especially those who have been excluded or are vulnerable.
Shaped by our Philosophy of Education, we strive to develop grounded, hope‑filled young people who listen deeply and treat their neighbour and the Earth with justice, love and the compassion of Christ.

We celebrate the communities, relationships and shared mission that continue to shape our story.
We share an understanding that the universe is graced and all creation is inherently dignified and worthy of reverence, and we hear both the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. GSE fosters learning communities that grow in wisdom, challenge exclusion, and stand humbly in solidarity with those on the margins, impelled by the parable of the Good Samaritan and guided by the Rule of Benedict.
News from our academic departments...
Recently, Year 10 students had the privilege of watching a Bell Shakespeare performance of Macbeth. The experience was incredibly entertaining and engaging. Right away, the actors were in character, interacting with the audience, and bringing students and teachers on stage to participate. They were extremely talented; aptly explaining the play, building our knowledge of the techniques and meanings present which will ultimately support us during the next essay task on Macbeth. As students, we often find it hard to see Shakespeare's themes in a contemporary light, however, they managed to bring the themes of manipulation and the disruption of moral order to life in an inclusive manner.
Their performance felt alive.
We are very grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank both the teachers involved in organising this and the actors who created such a memorable experience.

Earlier this week, Zoe A and I had the pleasure of accepting a special invitation from the Sydney Recital Hall, an opportunity that offered a rare behind‑the‑scenes look at one of Australia’s premier performance venues.
During our visit, we met with the Hall’s in‑house technical team and explored the flexibility of the space. From observing a masterclass and rehearsal with the Brandenburg Orchestra to learning how the venue transforms for contemporary artists such as Kate Miller-Heidke and Jessica Mauboy, the experience showcased the breadth of performances the Hall supports.
These industry connections are invaluable for our students, and we are deeply grateful to the Sydney Recital Hall team, particularly Tim, Stuart, and Matt, for their generosity, time, and willingness to share their expertise.
This opportunity was made possible through Zoe’s recent achievement as regional VET Student of the Year, ahead of her participation in the upcoming state awards in August. As part of her industry integration, Zoe gained firsthand insight into the pathways available to students pursuing careers in entertainment and live production.
Zoe reflected on the experience, sharing:
“I greatly enjoyed being taken backstage at the Sydney Recital Hall and getting to experience what it is like being backstage and interacting with various workers in their respective positions. This experience has overall broadened my understanding of what it is like to work in the entertainment industry.”
I would like to thank Tim, Stewart, and Matt for the time they spent explaining their roles and how the Hall operates.”
Below are some photos from our visit, capturing Zoe’s experience exploring the industry from the inside out. This excursion highlights the powerful connection between classroom learning and real‑world pathways, and the exciting futures our students are preparing to step into.

The NSWCCC Cross Country Championships were held on Wednesday 24 June at the International Equestrian Centre. Stella had 11 students representing CGSSSA at this event: Lucy T, Ellie O, Hanna G, Sarah C, Bella R, Emily C, Piper B, Amelia M, April U, Zaylee Z and Mila C.
All Stella students had a great day and recorded outstanding results against some of the toughest competition in NSW! It was great to see so many of the Stella girls come home with medals! Only 21 individual medals were awarded to NSWCCC female students on the day and Stella amazingly won four of these:
Lucy T: 🥈12 year girls
Sarah C: 🥉13 year girls
Bella R: 🥉14 year girls
Amelia M: 🥇15 year girls
Special mention also to the students who won gold in the team event:
April U and Zaylee Z (16 year girls), Amelia M (15 year girls), Sarah C (13 year girls).
These results reflect the incredible talent and hard work of the students. Congratulations to all students who competed on their excellent results. Best of luck to Lucy, Sarah, Bella and Amelia who will now race at the NSW All Schools event in Term 3.
It has been a busy, but very successful few weeks for Stella Football.
Congratulations to Charlotte C and Camille C who recently represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Football Championships. Both Stella students had an outstanding tournament and gained valuable experience playing against the Open NSWCIS and NSWCHS teams. Well done to Charlotte who was selected in the NSW All Schools team following the tournament. She will now play at the School Sport Australia Football Championships in Melbourne in Term 3.
Congratulations Charlotte!
Our junior representative soccer team played in their qualifiying round of the NSWCCC knockout tournament against Mater Maria on Monday 22 June. Stella had a good win and will now progress to the quarter finals. They will play either Wagga or Canberra in early Term 3!
The Stella Bill Turner team continues to move through the knockout rounds in fantastic form! It was a tough, but exciting game in round 4 against Brigidine. With the scores locked at 0-0 at full time, the game went into extra time. However, Stella dominated the extra time and scored a great goal to win the game 1 – 0.
They now move into the final 32 teams of the national competition. They will play William Clarke College in week one of Term 3. Good luck team!
Congratulations to the Stella teams who played at the CGSSSA Futsal Championships at Camellia Indoor Sports Centre on Friday 19 June. Stella had junior and open teams playing at this event.
Both teams went through the day undefeated, winning against strong teams from schools such as Monte, Santa Sabina, St Scholastica and Loreto Kirribilli. Both teams made it all the way to the grand finals, where they played against Mount Saint Benedict in both divisions. The Stella teams played very well, but both were unlucky to lose by one goal (the open team lost in extra time). Well done to both teams on winning the silver medal on the day!
Good luck to our representative rugby players, Matisse F, Lara M and Mya B who will play at the NSW All Schools Rugby 7s on Thursday 25 June. Matisse will be representing the NSWCCC 18s team, Lara in the NSWCCC 16s team, and Mya in the NSW Barbarians 18s team. Well done on your selection to play at such a high level!

Good luck to Lara M who is representing NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools U16 rugby league championships next week! Lara has had a great year in Rugby League, achieving high representative levels in the NSW Schools pathway and with the Lisa Fiaola Cup Central Coast Roosters teams. Good luck Lara!

I wish all members of our community a safe, restful and joyful holiday break and look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 21 July for the commencement of Term 3.
Warm regards,
Sharyn Quirk
Principal

All Stella students had a great day and recorded outstanding results against some of the toughest competition in NSW! It was great to see so many of the Stella girls come home with medals! Amelia M: 🥇15 year girls
Special mention also to the students who won gold in the team event:

Thank you to all the Jazz Band students who played marvellously last Sunday week at the Pittwater Instrumental Band Festival. It was an exciting performance at Harbord Public School. We were also privileged to hear a number of other local secondary school jazz bands. We would like thank the parents who came down to support their daughters and congratulate the students for their wonderful musicianship.
The Showcase of Music held on Wednesday 17 June was an amazing night. The talent of every single student was jaw dropping and inspiring. Genres and repertoire ranging from musical theatre, rock, R&B to pop had the audience in complete awe the whole show. A huge congratulations to all the performers involved.

Our Winter Series hosted three sold out shows over two nights of ‘A Celebration of Dance. The vibrant program showcased the immense talent and versatility of our students, featuring beautifully executed routines across a diverse range of styles including Hip-hop, Lyrical, and Jazz. While the evenings were filled with joy and fun, they also marked a poignant and nostalgic milestone for our graduating seniors who took to the stage for their final school performance. A special heartfelt shoutout goes to our dedicated Year 12 dance girls, Madi W, Sari N, Gracie H, Gabi W, Ava R, Ashlee G, Heidi M, Keeley D alongside Performing Arts Prefect, Lily T and College Vice-Captain, Maya M.
