Welcome to Week 8!
Sharyn Quirk
Principal
Dear Stella Maris Community,
Week 8 marks an important milestone in the semester. With assessments largely completed, our focus now turns to reflection, feedback and growth. Learning is not defined by a mark or grade alone, but by the progress students make as they embrace challenges, respond to feedback and strive to improve. As we approach the end of Semester One, I encourage our students to make the most of every opportunity to learn, contribute and flourish within our Stella community.
Last Thursday, our College community came together to celebrate one of the most anticipated and joy-filled events on the Stella calendar - Stella Day.
The day began with a beautiful College Mass, providing an opportunity for us to gather in prayer and reflection as we honoured Mary and celebrated the enduring legacy of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. Their example of compassion, hospitality and service continues to shape who we are as a community and inspire the young women we seek to form.
This year's theme, Stella on Tour, transformed the College into a vibrant celebration of music, travel and adventure. Students embraced the theme with enthusiasm, creativity and imagination, bringing colour and energy to every corner of the campus. The much-loved Lip Sync Battles and Battle of the Bands showcased the extraordinary talents of our students and staff, creating moments of laughter, connection and spirited competition that will long be remembered.
More than a day of festivities, Stella Day is a celebration of belonging. It reminds us of the strength of our community, the importance of shared experiences and the joy that comes from gathering together in friendship, gratitude and Stella spirit.
The strong sense of community evident throughout Stella Day is one of the defining characteristics of Stella Maris and will be celebrated again later this year as we gather for another significant milestone in our 95th Anniversary celebrations.
On Sunday 7 June, four of our Year 9 students departed Australia for the United States to compete in the Future Problem Solving Program International Finals, joining some of the brightest young minds from around the globe.
This extraordinary opportunity follows the team's outstanding success at the Australian Finals, where they were awarded the National Silver Medal, placing second in Australia and earning the right to represent both Stella Maris College and Australia on the international stage.
The team's analysis of future issues in Nanotechnology was exceptional, demonstrating creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and remarkable foresight. Their ability to explore complex global challenges and propose innovative solutions exemplifies the capabilities of young women who are prepared not only to engage with the future, but to help shape it.
Congratulations to our National Silver Medallists:
Over the course of the conference, the students will participate in competitive events, attend workshops and presentations, engage in collaborative problem-solving with international teams, and take part in the Opening Ceremony and Awards Program. Beyond the competition itself, the experience offers an invaluable opportunity to connect with like-minded students from around the world and develop the skills needed to tackle the challenges of the future.
As they compete alongside students from across the globe, they carry with them the pride, support and best wishes of the entire Stella Maris community. We are immensely proud of their achievement and look forward to following their journey and celebrating their success upon their return.
We wish the team, and their teachers Mrs Cath Douglas and Ms Christina Kalinic, every success as they represent Stella Maris with distinction on the world stage.

As part of our 95th Anniversary celebrations, I warmly invite all members of the Stella Maris community - parents, carers, alumni, past and present staff, and friends of the College - to join us for our 95th Anniversary Gala Ball, Legacy of Lights, on Saturday 12 September at Manly Pacific Hotel.
This special evening will celebrate the rich history, enduring spirit and bright future of Stella Maris. It will be an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, forge new connections and honour the generations of women, families and staff who have contributed to the life of our College over the past 95 years.
Whether you are a current parent, a former student, a past staff member or a long-time supporter of Stella, we would be delighted to have you join us for what promises to be a memorable evening of celebration and community.
For our alumni, this may also be the perfect opportunity to gather a group of classmates and organise a table together. We look forward to welcoming members of the Stella family from across the decades as we celebrate our shared legacy and look with confidence towards the future.
Further details regarding tickets and bookings will be shared in the coming weeks.

At Stella Maris College, we know that regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success, wellbeing and engagement. Every lesson, every conversation and every shared experience contributes to a young person's growth, confidence and sense of belonging.
While an occasional absence may seem insignificant, the impact of missed learning accumulates quickly. Research from the NSW Department of Education indicates that a student who misses just one day of school each fortnight can lose the equivalent of more than one year of learning over the course of their schooling. Missing one day each week can result in the equivalent of more than two and a half years of lost learning.
Attendance is about far more than academic instruction. Students who are present each day benefit from classroom discussions, immediate feedback from teachers, collaboration with peers, co-curricular opportunities and the countless moments that contribute to a vibrant and connected school experience. These opportunities cannot always be replicated through catch-up work.
As a College committed to helping every student flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, we thank families for their ongoing partnership in prioritising attendance and supporting their daughters to be present, engaged and ready to learn each day.
As part of the Manly Freshwater Parish's 150th Anniversary celebrations, the Waves of Grace Grand Raffle will officially launch on 14 June.
This exciting community initiative brings together parishioners, schools and families in support of the ongoing life and ministries of the Parish. With an impressive prize pool including a Chery Tiggo 4 SUV, two Flight Risk e-bikes with accessories, a $14,000 dream holiday package and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, there are many opportunities to be involved.
Families who nominate Stella Maris College when purchasing tickets will also be eligible for a number of Stella-specific prize opportunities. We are particularly grateful to parishioner Larissa Landinez, designer of the Stella Maris Collection, who has generously donated almost $4,000 worth of jewellery to be awarded through exclusive Stella Maris prize draws during July and August.
The raffle also includes monthly school prize draws. Students whose families purchase five or more raffle tickets will automatically be entered into draws held at the end of June, July and August, with MacBooks and iPads among the prizes available. In addition, the highest ticket-purchasing family from each participating school will go into the draw to win a Nintendo Switch 2.
In the coming days, each family will receive a Waves of Grace Family Pack containing full details of the raffle, information on how to purchase tickets, eligibility for the various prize draws and instructions on how to ensure their participation is linked to Stella Maris College.
We encourage families to consider supporting this important Parish initiative as we celebrate 150 years of faith, service and community in Manly Freshwater Parish.

As we move into the final weeks of Semester One, students are encouraged to continue embracing the opportunities before them - in their learning, service, creativity, leadership and participation in College life. Growth is often found in the everyday moments: showing up, persevering through challenges, supporting others and striving to be the best version of oneself.
To our families, thank you for your ongoing partnership and for the many ways you support your daughters and our College community. Together, we continue to nurture young women of confidence, compassion and courage - young women who are equipped not only to succeed, but to make a meaningful difference in the world.
May the weeks ahead be filled with continued learning, connection and moments of joy as we journey towards the conclusion of a rewarding semester.
Warm regards,

News from our academic departments...
Last week, Year 12 student, Zoe A, attended the NSW Training Awards as a nominee in the category of NSW VET Student of the Year for the Central and Northern Sydney Region.
After three rounds of nominations, video submissions, and face-to-face interviews, Zoe impressed the judging panel at every stage - making it all the way to the top three.
I’m thrilled to share that Zoe took out the award and is the very deserving recipient of the Central and Northern Sydney Region NSW VET Student of the Year!
This recognition reflects the remarkable craft she has developed in crewing, staging, and technical production - building confidence and expertise behind the scenes across a range of collaborative and leadership roles over the past four years. She has stage managed some of our main-stage productions - The Addams Family (2026), Cabaret (2025), Shrek (2024), The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (2023), and Matilda (2022) - alongside numerous other creative and curriculum projects. Whilst also taking time to mentor our younger students, it shows the passion and energy she shares for the craft. Zoe has truly found her place to shine, and this award is a wonderful reflection of her dedication to the craft.

On Thursday 4 June, I attended the NSW Training Awards as a Finalist for VET in Schools Student of the Year. The ceremony was held at the Sydney Independent Theatre and consisted of five categories: Vocational Student of the Year, VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year, VET in Schools Student of the Year, School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Trainee of the Year, and Apprentice of the Year. In preparation for the ceremony, finalists were photographed both with and without their certificates and given the chance to get to know each other. When my category was finally called, the two other finalists and I went on stage one at a time to formally receive our finalist certificates. I was then announced the Central and Northern Sydney Region winner. From here, I am proceeding to State Interviews, and if I succeed there, I will become a state finalist and attend the final ceremony where they announce the State VET Student of the Year. This was an incredible experience, and I am so grateful for this opportunity.

Year 12 Entertainment students recently attended Come Alive Circus Spectacular at the Big Top at the Entertainment Quarter. Students were also invited backstage for a tour of the Sydney Theatre Company at Walsh Bay, where they explored the props, costumes, scenery workshop, and set construction departments. The day concluded with an evening visit to Vivid Sydney. Lucy O shares her experience of the excursion below.

'I enjoyed the excursion. 'Come Alive' at the Big Top was an incredible show and the vision, lighting, audio and staging aspects of the show were amazing. On the excursion we also had a backstage tour of The Sydney Theatre Company. Our tour guide (Estifan) was very knowledgeable and engaging. We toured through staging, costume, props, and experienced what goes on behind the scenes leading up to a production. These experiences also have given us a guide as to what is possible and available to us in the industry. I loved the excursion as I had an incredible experience with my Entertainment class and my friends. We all bonded through the excursion and shared lots of laughs. Lastly, we visited Vivid. The projection on the MCA building and the Opera House was so detailed and beautiful. Thank you to Mr Smith and those who helped organise the excursion. I will remember this excursion as one of my highlights of Year 12.'

Congratulations to two Year 7 students who have given back to the community through involvement in the Kids Giving Back volunteer program.
A heartfelt acknowledgement of the meaningful contribution that Anna M and Millie S made with Kids Giving Back over Term 1 and the Easter school holidays.
These students were part of a remarkable group of young people who rolled up their sleeves and got involved in real, hands-on support for the community.
Together, they helped prepare over 4200 meals and close to 1000 essential care items, all of which were distributed to many charities supporting vulnerable individuals and families across Sydney.
What stood out most wasn’t just what they made, but how they showed up, with empathy, teamwork and a genuine willingness to contribute. Experiences like these, build confidence, perspective and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
As we move into the colder months, demand for support services continues to rise. There is an increasing need for nutritious meals and the contributions of young people play a vital role in helping to meet that demand.
Please consider volunteering with Kids Giving Back or reach out via email to Ms Metcalfe to sign up for the GIFT Cook Program next occurring Thursday 25 June in the final week of this term.
Thank you!

Welcome to Duke of Ed News!

We are excited to launch the 2026 Online Auction in support of the Happy Days Cambodian Village School in Siem Reap. In June, 40 students and seven staff members will travel to Cambodia to volunteer within the school community and support meaningful educational initiatives.
This year, the group is aiming to raise funds to purchase 60 bicycles for students who often walk up to two hours each way to attend school. A bicycle can make an enormous difference to a child’s access to education and daily life.
We invite our school community to support this important cause by bidding on auction items generously donated by local businesses or by making a direct donation through the auction page. Every contribution will go directly towards supporting the students and families connected to our Cambodian partner school.

As the Gold Duke of Ed Year 11 and 12 students prepare for our trip to Cambodia, there are many different drives that are popping up in preparation for when we depart. In particular, we are hoping to collect as many flannelette sheets as possible so that we can provide Susanne Pawley with enough material to sew personal care products for the women in Cambodia. These women face challenging situations where menstrual care is taboo, so it becomes increasingly difficult for them to gain access to materials that are acceptable within their culture. We would greatly appreciateny old flannelette sheets that are no longer getting any love, so that they can be cut up and sewn into discreet period products.
For Years 7 to 10, there will be a drop off point outside the Head of Years offices in the Convent, and for Years 11 and 12, it will also be outside the Head of Years office downstairs at Bennies. Thank you so much in advance.
Georgia M and Sanna M
The Duke of Ed students travelling to Cambodia are calling for donations of clothing and shoes for men, women and babies. Please refer to the posters below for details of what to donate and where to deliver. Thank you for your support.

Congratulations to the Stella touch teams who played at the NSW Touch Metro All Schools Championships over the last two weeks.
The Year 7/8 Championships were held on Tuesday 2 June at Taren Point. Stella had three teams playing on this day. All three teams had a fantastic day, winning many games and improving as the day went on. Our Stella 1 team (made up of students in both Year 7 and Year 8) was particularly successful, going through the pool games and semi final undefeated, to make it to the grand final! They played a strong Endeavour Sports High School team in the final, and were very unlucky to lose 3 – 2, with Endeavour scoring right on the final siren to win the game. Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Stella 1 team on winning the silver medal, and qualifying for the NSW State Final in September.
The Year 9/10 Championships were held on Tuesday 9 June, also at Taren Point. Stella had 2 teams playing on this day. The Stella 2 team had a tough draw. They played some great games but did not progress through to the quarter finals. The Stella 1 team comprised of students in years 7 – 10. They were the team to beat from the very start of the day, with strong wins in all pool games, the quarter and semi finals. This team also met Endeavour Sports High in the grand final. However, this time it was a reverse of last weeks results. With the scores drawn at 2 – 2 and only seconds to play, the Stella team scored to take the win 3 – 2. Congratulations on being the 2026 Sydney Metro Champions for 2026! This team will now also play in the NSW State final in September. Well done to all players!
Congratulations to Rileigh S, Isla S and Hannah L who represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Hockey Championships in Newcastle last week. Rileigh was part of the CCC open team, who went through undefeated to win the tournament. Rileigh was also selected into the NSW All Schools Merit team – a huge achievement!
Isla and Hannah played in the NSWCCC 15 years and under team, who also went through the event undefeated. Both Hannah and Isla played dominant roles in all games.
A big congratulations to Isla who was selected into the NSW All Schools team. She will now represent NSW All Schools at the School Sport Australia Hockey Championships in Melbourne in July.
Congratulations to the Stella Hockey team who played in the grand final of the Mollie Dive Hockey competition on Wednesday 10 June against Brigidine College, St Ives.
The Stella team had a fantastic season, and despite playing with a young and small team, they progressed through to the grand final without losing a game. Unfortunately, the Stella team had a number of injuries in the lead up to the grand final, which meant we had to play the game two players short. It was a close and exciting game, and despite being down two players (and playing without a goal keeper for the whole game), the Stella team was in it until the last two minutes of the game, when Brigidine scored two quick goals to take the win 4 – 2.
Congratulations to the Stella team on winning the silver medal – a big achievement for our young, talented team! Well done to all members of the team.
Congratulations to Claudine S (Year 7) who represented NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools AFL Championships in Albury last week. Claudine had an outstanding tournament and played an instrumental role in her teams’ success. The NSWCCC won every game by a huge margin to finish the event as state champions. To top off a fantastic competition, Claudine was named the NSWCCC Most Vaulable Player and selected in the NSW All Schools team. She will now play at the School Sport Australia AFL Championships in Melbourne in July. Well done Claudi!

Well done to Piper B, Charlotte H and Florence W who recently played at the NSWCCC water polo trials. All three students played very well and gained valuable experience playing against the older students.
It is finals time for many of our Term 2 sport teams! Good luck to the basketball, netball and water polo teams who will be playing in semi finals and grand finals in the coming weeks!
Term 3 sport registrations have been sent out to all students. A reminder to any students who would like to participate in any extra curricular Stella sport in Term 3, they should register their interest through the sport registration links that they have been emailed by Monday 15 June.

Stella Day was again a massive hit this year with nine bands competing for the title. Congratulations to Ruby T, Samantha B and Sophia S who took out the title with their rocking cover of ‘Enter Sandman’. The girls only just beat last year’s winners, ‘The Avenue’, with only a couple of points the difference.
